Dearling Physique-Discipline Your Hands
Dearling Physique is the brainchild of electroshaman extraordinaire Domino. His band's new video for the song Discipline Your Hands overlaps the everyday and the fantastic, referencing both psychoanalysis and psychotropics. Dom's new album, Deadeye Dealer will be released 1/11/11. I had an opportunity to discuss the video with the man himself. Here's what he had to say.
This video reminds me a bit of Labyrinth. Are you a big Bowie fan?
Yes. Today's his birthday!
Did you shoot this video in your castle?
Yeah. I shot it in the basement of my castle.
Is there any narrative behind the video?
The video is about memories vying for attention, about the female character accepting something she has been avoiding.
Do you base your songs on your life?
Yes. I base my songs on people I know, experiences I have and dreams that come to me.
Are you a wizard?
Yes.
Who made the video?
It's directed by Ansel Wallenfang.
Did you do the choreography?
Yes.
There is a lot of theatrical material (costumes, props, staging) in your work. Do you have a background in theatre?
I do. I've done theatre since I was about 6.
When you perform, do you feel like you are assuming a character, or are you being more like yourself?
When I perform, I am assuming a character. I feel like it helps better clarify my song's intention if I become what I am referring to.
When did you start writing songs?
When I was about 14.
What are your plans for the near future?
I'm thinking of ways to enlarge my superbrain so I can lure more people into my dungeon. Montreal is next.
What's going on in Montreal?
I'm going to play a show at Barfly on Tuesday, the 11th.
Are you touring?
Yes. Montreal, Burlington, Pittsburgh and New York.
I saw you open for Bat for Lashes a while back and your performance was top notch. Did you feel pressured to put on a good show?
I never feel pressured to put on a good show. I try to emit good energy so that I can receive good energy.
What animal is your familiar?
A lynx.
Do you have an album coming out soon?
Yes. Next Tuesday. It's called Deadeye Dealer.
Are you putting it out yourself?
Yes.
You are very self-reliant artistically. Do you like to be in control?
It depends on what your dealing with. Sometimes it's good to relinquish control.
You've lived in Minneapolis for for a while. What do you think about the scene here?
It's hard to say. I don't really feel like I'm very much a part of the scene here, because I'm wrapped up in my own world.
What is your overall artistic goal?
To continue creating music and art that stimulates and challenges.
