SBTRKT-Look at Stars

Tribal masks and all, low end warrior SBTRKT and vocal collaborator Sampha offer up Look at Stars, which at once brings to mind another Headhunter... and a Hercules. The song appears on a limited edition EP entitled Step In Shadows (2010, Young Turks). The vocal refrain "On my way home, I look at stars" recoils o'er and again atop electro drums and an Axel F bassline. As we head homeward, we head skyward, lifted by the music.

Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson (1955-2010)

Sad news arrived yesterday from the darker side of the electronic music world. Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, an original member of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and Coil (also a graphic designer for the influential British agency Hipgnosis and a prolific videographer) died in his sleep on November 24th. No word yet as to the cause of death. Christopherson's influence as a musician, designer, videographer and cultural catalyst spans decades and survives his passing. A tireless advocate of following one's own path, left-handed or otherwise, Sleazy is a beacon to those unafraid to challenge themselves artistically, sexually, spiritually or physically, regardless of the inhibitive pressures of society. His life, inseparable from his creativity, was and is revolutionary.

Brian Eno-Allen Loop

Fresh on the heels of yesterday's post regarding his Seven Sessions On A Milk Sea, Brian Eno delivers the next installment, Allen Loop!

Cepia-Hootenanny

December 7th marks the release date of Cepia's new album Cepia. (2010, Cepia Music) Just to pique your interest, the artist is offering up a free track called Hootenanny. I'm not sure if Huntley Miller, a Twin Cities resident, is giving a nod to the Replacements here or not. Whatever the case, his song delivers the same no-nonsense, down-to-the-bone vibe the Mats made legendary, albeit the bone of quite another animal. Akin equally to Timbaland and Autechre's best work, this is an intelligently crafted song you can bob your braindance to. I'm sure the album follows suit.

The Somethin Else #7 (Virtual Vittles)

With the holiday bustle upon us, and in the interest of giving everyone a chance to participate, the 7th installment of The Somethin' Else will take place 12pm on Friday, December 10th here on The Somethin' Else blog. To be a part of the event, make a video or audio recording of an electronic music performance, post it somewhere, and send me a link at thesomethinelse@gmail.com (no later than December 7th). Please include the name of your project and what virtual dish you are bringing for us to enjoy. There are no time or genre restrictions, just as long as it's electronic and you perform it. Mind you, The Somethin' Else is still an all ages event, even on the internet, so no unsavory content. Let's see what kind of delightful Second Life smorgasbord (smorgasborg?) we can cook up!

Short Circuit

Short Circuit is a great electronic music event curated by Logan Erickson and held monthly at Shuga Records. Much like The Somethin' Else, performances at Short Circuit run the gamut of electro-musical expression, but all gravitate toward a high quality locus. This month's event features Garland Villanova, Erik Tinberg, Alien God Theory and Nathan Mclaughlin. Check it out!

The Somethin' Else #6 Recap

The Somethin' Else #6 saw a select group of seasoned souls give their all to an attentive and appreciative audience at Cult Status Gallery. With the Gods and Monsters show as a backdrop, we let it rip. Due to some broken gear, Nils and I even had the opportunity to free bass a little. An amazing event through and through!
